Our coaching team feel it is to the benefit of the parents and players to know what the focus of training will be for the next 6-8 weeks of practice.  Following the competency matrix, our coaches have provided the primary themes and objectives for each age group ...

The following information provides parents and players with the primary coaching themes and objectives for a 2-month period.  These priorities are established by the Coach Team and the Director of Coaching to include the core curriculum goals for the player’s stage of development (see the competency matrix).

The coaches use either a ‘progressive’ or ‘whole-part-whole’ approach and the following methodology:

  • Technical Training – individual and small group work designed to correct technical flaws, accumulate valuable repetition and to focus on technical details.  Technical training is vital for all players and is suitable for novice and advanced players.
  • Functional Training – coaches will design activities to establish knowledge and understanding of positional/functional roles.  Players should know the numbering system for their game format and the functional responsibilities of each role.
  • Pattern Play – the coach will orchestrate player movement and ball combinations to establish attacking and defending styles of play.  At first with no/limited pressure and eventually to full game conditions.
  • Small Sided Games – Commencing with less players on the field than the age specific game format, the coach will introduce important game related tactics and objectives.
  • Phase of Play – the set-up is on half to two-thirds of the field with at least 2 lines of the team – the application of game related concepts.
  • Coaching the Game and Coaching in the Game – the coach teaches the players during the course of the game – from the sideline or stepping onto the field in the flow of the game.

Each team follows the club curriculum and the coaches draw out the primary coaching themes and establish the objectives based on the performances in practices and games.  Click on the links below to learn the specifics for each team for a two month period:
